In 1994, a few years after the bursting of the bubble economy, many people were still enjoying the booming economy, never dreaming that a long and painful recession, which was said to have bottomed out in April 1999, would hit Japan, and that it would last for another five years.

Therefore, there was little interest in the small standby electricity consumption of 10Wh to 100Wh. In addition, the number of people who had the idea of saving standby electricity consumption seemed to be small and limited.

In the 1970s, the notion of conservation was rare among those who worked and led industry, even saying or believing that consumption and disposing of goods were a virtue. The post-World War II era of material scarcity, a time a few decades ago when saving and endurance were top priorities, was forgotten as if it were a distant memory due to the effects of the bubble economy. It seems that humans are animals that forget things that should not be forgotten.

No one was opposed to the idea of saving energy and saving electricity, but there was no momentum in favor of it, either. It may be true that the memories of the post-World War II era, when saving money and being patient were very important, is forgotten once the heat of the moment passes. In a sense, it may have been too early for Setsuden-mushi.

However, in retrospect, it is clear from the current global situation that it is never too early to start saving energy and saving electricity, with the exception of the United States, which was enjoying a long economic boom and using energy as much as it could as of 2000.

It depends on the actions of each individual whether or not the practice of energy conservation will result in the prevention of global warming, for example.

It is important not to think of saving money passively or backwardly as painful or outdated, but to change our mindset that saving money is one of the ways to bring good fortune in the near future, which will surely be a good gift to our future descendants.
