「心の中に平和のとりでを築かなければならない」
私のおばあちゃんは怖かった。小学生の私が母屋に行くと、いつも火鉢のそばで
「南無阿弥陀仏、南無阿弥陀仏」
と唱えていた。
父が亡くなって、若い父が三人の兄と一緒に写っている写真が見つかった。そのうち二人がフィリピンのレイテ島で戦死していた。おばあちゃんは、息子が二人亡くなって悲しみのあまりいつもお経を唱えていたのだろう。

自分も父親になって、子供が亡くなることの悲しみが少しは分かるようになった。この世は、目に見えていても見えていないことがたくさんある。父は中国の戦場に送り込まれたそうだ。そこで何があったのか、息子である私に何も語らず亡くなった。
I became a father with 3 children and canunderstand the sadness. In this world,we have a lot of things which we can see but cannot see. They say my father fought in China. He didn’t tell me anything about hisexperience and died.
言えないようなことがあったことは想像できる。息子にだけは、良い父親でいたかったのだろう。私も子供たちには良い父親でいたいから気持ちが分かる。バツイチになって、良い父親になりそこなったが。
There must be many thingswhich he could not tell to others. Hemust want to be a good father to us. Ialso want to be a good father to my children. I failed in it because we separated.
高校の時にユネスコ憲章を読んで、「教育学部」に行こうと決意した。

あれから４０年。私は目標どおりに「先生」と呼ばれる仕事をしている。初志を貫徹しているだろうか。

Japanesepoliticians who should make this society better are sons of politicians. They are just like feudal lords. The merit system lives only in the entranceexam system.
私は受験では成功をした方だろうが、社会に影響を与えられるような大きな仕事はできない。出来ることは、せいぜい英語と数学を指導するくらい。われでいいと考えている。人間は１人では何もできない。
みんな自分の持ち場で頑張るしかない。
二世、三世と世襲制になると人材の流動が起こらず、実力のある人が世に出られない。受験だけは実力主義なので、この制度だけは守らなくてはならない。

私がＮＳＮで動画やブログを投稿したら、反発の誹謗中傷のメールや掲示板の書き込みが相次いだ。よほどヒマなのだろう。私を嫌う人も、支持してくれる人も感情の表れだ。
私は、そういう感情には興味がないので
「高木先生は、なんで誹謗されても平気なのですか？」
と質問を受ける。
After I began to contribute to SNS, somepeople have sent blackmails and sometimes written abuses on my school’sbulletin board. They revel theiremotions, which I’m not interested in.
Then some of my students ask me
“Mr. Takagi, why don’t you mind abuses? ”
私が好きでも嫌いでも、当塾の合格者数という現実とは何の関係もない。英検１級を持って、京大二次で英語８割、数学７割をとった現実は変わりない。私が嫌いでも他に指導できる講師がいなければ、当塾に来てもらえる。
Whether they like me or not doesn’t change thefact that my school has a lot of good students who passed the entrance exams togood schools. It doesn’t change the fact that I passed the 1st gradeof Step test and took 80% of correct answers in English and math tests.
Even if they don’t like me, they come to myschool because they have no other substitute.
難病におそわれ手術が必要になったら、手術ができる医者が１人しかいなかったら、その医者の性格が気に入らない、気に入るなんて言っている場合ではない。私がめざしている塾講師は、そんな塾講師なのだ。
好かれようなどと思っていない。
If you fell a victim to an incurable diseaseand have only one doctor who can operate, you must not care if you like him ornot. That’s what I want to be.
私を攻撃する人は、
「おまえを好きな人はいない」
とか
「ムカつく」
とか、感情の言葉で非難してくる。そういう人は、感情的な攻撃に弱いのだろう。しかし、残念ながら、そういう攻撃は私には無意味なのに。
People who attack me must be emotional. They must be weak in emotional attack. So they misunderstand that I will be introuble when they say
“Idon’t like you.”
or
“I’mangry.”
Such attack is useless, though.
そういう非論理的な人に説明してもムダなので、相手にしないことにしている。勉強のできない子は、
「英語の佐藤先生が嫌いだから、英語も嫌いになった」
という感情的な反応が多すぎるのだ。賢い子は
「英語の佐藤先生は嫌いだけど、英語は好き」
と感情に流されない。教師など視野に入っていなからだ。
Such illogical people never understand logicalexplanation. So I never waste time toexplain it. Bad students say
“SinceI don’t like English teacher, Mr.Sato, I don’t like English.”
But smart students say
“AlthoughI don’t like English teacher,Mr.Sato, I like English.”
Teachers are not important. In other words, emotions are not important.
私も小学生の頃から教師になど何も期待していない生徒だった。だから、授業と関係なく勉強を進めていたし、中学三年生の夏休みには学年主任に電話して
「この問題集をやりたくないので、自分で選んだ問題集をやります」
と認めさせて、課題は提出しなかった。競争に勝ちたいなら浪花節ではダメで、徹底的に論理的に考えるべきなのだ。

もちろん、私も人間なので嫌われるより好かれた方がいい。しかし、講師や監督という立場は、好かれるより勝たせることに優先順位を置かざるをえない。その真意が分かる子がいるのが救いだ。
Of course everybody wants to be liked by peopleand I’m one of them. But a crammingschool teachers’ responsibility is to help students to pass the entranceexams. Not to be liked. In some cases, we have to be disliked becausewe have to be strict sometimes. Goodstudents understand it.
いますぐ分かる必要もない。私も亡き父の真意は自分が父親になるまで分からなかった。生きているうちに感謝の言葉を言っておきたかったが、もう遅い。私もそれでいいと思っている。子供たちは、自分が親になる頃に私の真意に気づくはずだ。
Even if they don’t understand it now, theywill understand it later after becoming a father and a mother. I wanted to say thank you to my late fatheralthough it’s too late. My children willunderstand me after I die.
そのときに、自分が生きているかどうかは問題ではない。塾講師は生徒から評価されないと成立しない仕事だが、評価されようと意図すると媚びることになりがち。だから、自分のスタンスを「合格させる」に置いている。
It is not important for meif I live or not at that time. Crammingschool teachers have to be liked by students to have a job. So many teachers flatter and followstudents. I try not to be one of them.
その結果、嫌われたり好かれたりするわけだけど、成績上位の子には支持されることが過去３０年の指導経験で分かってきた。だから、このスタンスを変えないつもりだ。全ての人に好かれることなど不可能だし、必要もない。
Past 30 years let me know that good studentslike me. So it is O.K. for me to bedisliked by some people. I’ll not changethis stance. It is impossible to be likeby everyone.
そんなことに頭を使うより、指導方法や教材研究に時間を費やしたい。服装や髪型に凝る講師がいてもいいけど、私はそうなりたくない。正統派で勝負して、負けるようなら引退する。
I want to spend my time to study aboutteaching way and teaching materials. Not about costume or hair style. If nobody supports me, I will retire.
何のためにセンター試験を１０回も受け、京都大学を７回も受けたのか。それは、京大受験生の英作文の添削指導のために他ならない。この点に関しては、日本で誰にも負けないために努力してきた。
Why did I take the entranceexam to the University of Kyoto 7 times? It was for teaching the examinees to the school in the correspondentcourse. I’d like to be No.1 in this field.
普通の塾や予備校講師なら、名大卒と英検１級で十分だったのだが、
「もっと専門性の高い仕事がしたい」
と考えたのだ。

たとえば、クラブ活動というのは一定数の中学生や高校生にとって参加したくないものだ。これは、日々中学生や高校生の愚痴を聞かされている塾講師の声だから確かなことだ。保護者も同じだ。全員が強制クラブに賛成しているわけではない。
Some students don’t want to join clubactivities. This is true because Ilisten to what they say in my school every day. Students’ parents are the same. Imean some of them don’t like their sons and daughters join club activities.
ネットで検索してもらえれば分かるが、教師もクラブの指導が負担になって授業の準備ができないという悲鳴に似た声をブログであげている人が多い。そういう声を受けて文科省も体育系のクラブ活動の練習日を減らす指導を行っている。
Students must join club activities and have nochoice. You can check it through theInternet. Teachers also complain aboutit because they cannot prepare for the classes due to club activities. The ministry of education strongly recommendsthat teachers give more freedom to students.
その流れの中で地方自治体によってはクラブ活動の制限を始めている。

部活の「朝練」の禁止は、是か非か……。中学校の運動部活動の在り方に関して長野県教育委員会が示した方針が全国的に報道され、話題になっています。しかし示された方針は、決して朝の部活動だけではありません。中学校の運動部活動はどうあるべきか、全国に共通する問題を投げ掛けているように思えます。
クラブ活動を支持する人が多いのは知っている。私も中学校は体操部にいた。だから、好きな人はやればいい。しかし、強制はやめるべき。自主的でない活動など意味はない。
「強制」になっているのは、自由選択にしたらクラブ活動が崩壊すると支持派の人たちは分かっているのだ。つまり、かなり多くの人たちが反対意見であることを知っている。
I know thereare some people who like the club activity system. I joined one of the clubs. If you like it, you join it. However if you don’t like it, you don’t haveto join it. That is democracy.
People whosupport the club activity system knows that the system will be disrupted soon. That means they know quite a few people opposethe system.
どうして多くの生徒、保護者、教師が反対しているのに少数意見など聞く耳を持たないという横暴が何十年も続いているのだろう。
そんな小さな、当たり前の改革さえ出来ない学校という組織はとても民主的な組織と言えない。
Then why do theclub activities last long? Students,their parents and teachers don’t like it but nothing happens. School cannot be called democraticorganization.
私はＳＭＡＰが解散しようが継続しようが興味はないが、ジャニーズ事務所がブラック企業だということは分かった。退社しようとすると、脅しが入る。ここには職業選択の自由などありえない。
芸能界がどういう体質なのか、世間の人もよく分かったと思う。

私たちは以前から
「なんで、あんな歌のヘタな子が歌手をやってんの？」
と思っていたけれど、それは事務所が売り出したいからだと分かってしまった。ネットの中では“ゴリ押し”女優とか呼ばれている芸能人も多い。世の中が実力だけではなくて、コネがないと駄目なことくらい大人なら分かっているけれど、あまりに露骨に表に出されるとシラケる。
We sometimes think
“Why is that singer is popular and on TV?”
That is because she is in the big agent. Now the Internet lets us know the fact whichwe used to misunderstand or used to be controlled. We know in this worldsometimes the connection with a big boss is important. However we don’t like it because such asystem gives a chance to people who are not making efforts or not talented.

人間は束縛を嫌うから「自由権」が認められている。基本的人権を無視している学校はおかしい。学校の主役であるはずの生徒の基本的人権を踏みにじるのは、なぜなんだろう。
やはり、アメリカの学校のように午後２時半になったら学校は消灯して生徒を解放してやるのが正しい。そこから先は勉強したい子はすればいい。野球をしたい子はすればいい。
そういう自由があるから、アメリカでは自由な発想の企業が生まれる素地ができる。
People don’t like to be bothered when they dowhat they like. This is the main reasonwhy people think much of freedom and liberty. When I was teaching in Logan, Utah, the school was closed around 3:00p.m. and students went home. They coulddo what they liked after school.
In my view, thisis because the U.S. has many inventors who create new things.

「ちゃんと勉強しろ！」
と言われるような、遊びだ。そんなことをしていても、川越、桑高、四高に合格できるならいいが、そうでないなら勉強を優先すべき。そう判断する生徒まで「強制参加」をさせる学校とは、なにものなのだろう。

１人暮らしの高齢者は家族と同居している高齢者よりも生活の満足度が高く、悩みが少ない－。大阪府門真市の医師が実施した調査からそんな結果が明らかになった。高齢で体が不自由になると家族の介護が頼りと思われがちだが、体調があまりよくない人でも独居の方が満足度が高かった。調査した医師は「高齢者のお１人さま生活は、実は幸せなのでは」と話している。（加納裕子）

私は中学校の頃から、教師が「助け合い」「愛」「絆」を強調することに違和感があった。なぜなら、１人でマイペースで生きている方が楽しかったからだ。クラブ活動では、自分の体力の限界を越えた練習を強要されることがイヤだった。
勉強でも自分のペースよりスローだとフラストレーションが溜まる。四日市高校では、自分のペースより早すぎて欲求不満が募った。

努力し続ける限り「失敗の連続」となる。私は英語の資格試験を受けている頃に３９通の合格通知や不合格通知を受け取った。失敗の山だ。センター試験を１０回も受けたが、酷い点数の時もあった。京都大学を７回受けた時も連戦連勝というわけではなかった。

実は、教師や塾講師の大半も

と安請け合いをする。
