高木先生「算数は見えるけど、数学は見えないんだYou can see things in arithmetic but in math you cannot.」

桜子「どういうことWhat do you mean?」

高木先生「１＋１＝２　これは、鉛筆でもノートでも見せて説明ができるでしょ。We can explain this calculation using pencils or books.」

桜子「うんYes.」

高木先生「でも、例えば合成関数の場合　f(g(x))=x の場合、gとfという二つの操作をしてxに戻ったら、これは二つの操作で逆算数が成立したということでしょ？ But for example, in the case of f(g(x))=x, x and y change places.」

「？？？？」

高木先生「こういうことって、例を示すことは出来るけれど一般化するのは見えるものを使っては無理。It is impossible to explain the reason why using pencils or books in this case.」

鈴木先生「ＤＶＤや動画で何とかなるという話ではないのです。Even if you use DVD or motion pictures, it is useless.」

「そうなんだよね。自分の頭で考えて問題を解くしかないのだけど、多くの人は自分で考えるのを嫌がる。That's right. However many people don't like to think about it by themselves.」
